Compliance Testing – your obligations.

Compliance Test & Tag

It is an absolute requirement for all Kiwikrane franchisees that every sited machine has a current Test & Tag.

This is essential not only for the safety of customers and site staff, but also for maintaining Kiwikrane’s reputation as a premier amusement operator in New Zealand.

As our machines are located in environments classified as “hostile”, franchisees are legally required to ensure compliance with AS/NZS 3760:2010.

Failure to comply carries serious risk. For example, if an incident such as a fire were linked to a non-compliant machine in a major retail location, the consequences could be significant—both financially and reputationally—potentially impacting the entire franchise network.

Testing Requirements

All machines must be tested at least annually. The following tests are required under the standard:

  • Visual inspection
  • Insulation resistance
  • Earth continuity
  • Polarity
  • Earth leakage

In most cases, the primary areas of concern are plugs, power cords, and earthing. All metal components must be properly earthed and pass testing.

A compliance tag must be completed and attached to both the machine and the power cord (NOTE: Many electricians only attach a tag on the crane, but as the cord is removable, a tag also needs to attached to the cord).

If any repair work is carried out that could affect electrical safety, the machine must be re-tested before being returned to service.

Who Can Perform Testing

Testing must be carried out by a “competent person”—someone who has the appropriate knowledge, training, and ability to safely conduct the required inspections and tests in accordance with the standard.

Franchisees who meet this requirement may use a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) to complete annual testing.  Otherwise, there are many Test & Tag operators who advertise this service.

Once testing has been completed for a location, please advise the Support Office so that franchisor records can be updated.

Record Keeping Requirements

Accurate record keeping is essential. Franchisees must maintain:

  • A test tag on each machine showing:
    • Test date
    • Item identification
    • Name of the person performing the test
    • Pass/fail result
    • Next test due date
  • An asset register, including:
    • Asset ID
    • Description
    • Serial number
  • A historical testing record, including:
    • All test results
    • Dates of tests and re-tests
    • Details of any faults and repairs carried out

Maintaining strict compliance in this area protects you, your sites, and the entire Kiwikrane network.
